As per Mudgala and Ganesha Puranas ‘Maagha Shukla Chaturthi’ is the Aavirbhava day of Lord Ganesha, i.e. the day the Paramathma presented himself as the son of Parvati. Hence, this day is widely celebrated as Ganesha Jayanthi across India. While Bhadrapada Shuddha Chaturthi (which usually falls in Aug/Sep) is the day Lord Ganesha was made Vighnadhipathi, the ruler/controller of obstacles.
